"The back of the Buick was perfect.  Not a scratch.  I returned to the Buick and drove away.  It's not a good idea to mess with a woman who has a pimple."

--p.188 in Hot Six by Janet Evanovich

I finally have had a little bit of time to catch up on my "summer reading."  I usually spend much of the school year reading YA books so I can "sell" them to the kids, so I decided that I was taking this summer to read nothing but what I wanted to read.

As you've probably figured out by now, I'm working my way through the Stephanie Plum series.  I wasn't sure what to think as first, but the characters and their antics are cracking me up.  Grandma is a trip.  (Think Betty White's characters.)

I did finally watch the movie for the first book, One for the Money.  While I disagree with their casting, it wasn't as bad as I had heard.  (Personally, I think the guy playing Ranger should be Morelli.  Despite the fact that he doesn't have brown eyes,  I can definitely look past it because the rest of him is yummy.)  One thing that drove me nuts was the horrible "jersey" accents.  If the characters hadn't been trying so hard to make me believe their accents, it would have been better.  Overall, it wasn't bad, and I will probably go see the second one, if they decide to make it.

Until then,  I will be working my way through the series.  Honestly, if you want some "beach trashy" material that will have you laughing at loud at some points, you have to read this series.

Now it's your turn.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This great meme is hosted by Sheila at
Book Journey”.
It’s a great way to start the week and
find out what other bloggers are reading.
I would discuss how testing wen this past week, but it isn't really over yet.  I have 2 more days of proctoring the extended time (all day) testers before I can actually go back to my classroom and attempt to do some work.
I had hoped to get a lot of reading done since I was proctoring tests all week, but the poor kids needed help with the stupid online testing tools, so I was constantly running around while trying to be unobtrusive.  I feel a rant coming on, so I think I'll change the subject now.
Ahem....so, what are you reading this week?
I plan on finishing up with Janet Evanovich's Three to Get Deadly.  (Yes, I had to put it down for awhile to get some other books read for reviews.)  It's absolutely hilarious and I've actually missed hanging out with the crazy characters.  Hopefully the testers this week won't need as much help and I can get sucked back into the story.   I still haven't seen the movie for the first book, but I've also been told to wait for it on TV.  (That's kind of depressing since I see so much potential for this series.  Hopefully those others were wrong.  Now, I just have to figure out where I can still watch it.)

I want to start Luci Swindoll's Simple Secrets to a Happy Life.  I really enjoyed her other book Doing Life Differently, so I'm really excited to be reading this one now.   Her words were a very powerful and soothing balm to my restless spirit as she wrote about how God has manifested himself in her life in unexpected ways.  I think the reason why I feel such a kinship with Luci  is because she is single too, but hasn't let that stop her from living her life.  I can't wait to read what little nuggets of truth and wisdom she shares in this book.
I am also have an ARC of  Inescapable by Nancy Mehl.  I love suspense books and this one caught my eye because it features Mennonites.  Somehow I have never really put mystery and Mennonite together, so this should be a great combination.

What are you reading this week?  Anything interesting that I should add to my list?  Have a great Monday!  (Wait, is that an oxymoron?)

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

I know, I know...things have been in warp drive lately and I haven't had much time to sleep, let alone blog.  Hopefully things will calm down a little bit now that we're in testing season and I don't have to prepare for quite so many classes.

What have you been reading lately?  I finished a great ebook called Haunted on Bourbon Street by Deanna Chase.  She sent me an ARC of her ebook and I was really excited because it takes place in NOLA.  (Man do I miss that place!)  If you're into the paranormal and don't mind some steamy scenes, you'll really enjoy this book/series.  Jade Calhoun is the main character and she has just recently moved to NOLA at the request of one of her friends.  Unfortunately, her apartment is haunted and that's the last thing Jade needs.  The story kicks in gear from the first page and will have you turned (or scrolling) as quickly as you can to devour the story.  After I finished reading, I was glad to see that more books ahve been written so that I could find out more about the characters.  I had a lot of questions at the end of this book, so hopefully they get answered in the next book: Witches of Bourbon Street.

Currently, I'm reading Need You Now by Beth Wiseman.  It takes place in Round Top, Texas, which is close to where my aunt used to live and across the state from where I lived. I'm about halfway through the story and am really enjoying meeting all of the characters and they dynamics between them.  I have an idea for what I think is going to happen, but I'll have to keep reading to find out if I'm right.  I'll be posting a full review with a brief excerpt for you around the 24th of the month if you're interested in finding out more.

FCAT, our standardized testing, starts this week and I have to proctor for most of it.  Thankfully, I have Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series to read.  I'm supposed to sit and stare at the children for over 3 hours at a time, but that just freaks them out, so I've learned to "look busy" by bringing a book while proctoring.  I think the only issue I'm going to have is to try and not laugh while they're testing because the series is pretty funny.  Grandma's antics and Stephanie's thoughts have me laughing so hard that tears are rolling down my face, so I may have to bring something "boring" to read too so that the students aren't distracted by my guffawing in the back corner.  Stupid standardized tests.

Anyhoo, I apologize if I haven't made it to your blog and you've left comments on mine.  I'm trying to work may way through and respond to everyone; unfortunately, it's going slower than I would like.  Hmmm...I feel a sick day coming on soon.

So, what's on your list to read?  Anything exciting that I've missed in the past couple of weeks?  Any MUST READ NOWS?  Have a great Monday!

Spring Read Thing 2012

Spring, also known as "mild summer," is now in full effect here in Florida.  Our highs have been in the high 80's, and the humidity, well, let's just say we all carry hair bands and such because there's really no point in trying.  The snow birds will be heading home soon, so maybe traffic will lighten up a bit.  (Sorry, I just read that last sentence and had a laughing attack.)  In reality, I want to hitch a ride with the snowbirds.  Hey--maybe they need someone to read to them full-time!  ( I come with a cat.  Will read for chocolate.  Any takers? )

This leads me to the stunning realization that Spring started on Monday (No wonder that day felt like it would never end!), which also means it's the start of the Spring Read Thing 2012!  Katrina over at Callapidder Days hosts this wonderful event each year.  If you're interested, stop by her site and read this post to learn what it's about.

Since "Senior Season" is starting soon, I figure I should keep a rather small list because I already have to schedule time to sleep or it just isn't going to happen for me.  This is what I hope to read before the blasting furnace of a season, also known as summer, starts.

Fresh-Brewed Life by Nicole Johnson

Simple Secrets to a Happy Life by Luci Swindoll

Stand by Me by Neta Jackson

Stalker in the Shadows by Camy Tang

Gravestone by Travis Thrasher

Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich

My eyes are usually bigger than my time allotted, but it's always nice to dream.  What are you reading this spring?  I hope it's something fabulous!

I finished Sketchy Behavior by Erynn Mangum yesterday.  It was a cute YA read, although the ending seemed a bit trite.  Overall, it was good though, so if you want a quick read, you should put it on your list.

This week I've decided to go ahead and start reading Two for the Dough by Janet Evanovich.  The first one was pretty good, so I figured I should go ahead and start reading the rest of the series.  (Although books 3-18 may have to wait for summer since I have a lot of other books I would like to read beforehand.) No, I still haven't seen the movie for the first book, but I was told by several people to wait until it comes out on DVD because it wasn't really that great.  Disappointing news for sure, so I may just wait and see.  What are you reading?

I finally finished One for the Money by Janet Evanovich, so now I can go see the movie! Yay!  Hopefully it's like the book, although past experience with books made into movies makes me believe it will be a let down.  Maybe I'll be wrong this time.  You'd better believe that I'll continue reading the series.  It's funny without making me think too much.  It has mystery and a romance(?)--more like a like/hate relationship, but who knows--there were sparks in their past...

Now I'm reading Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent.  I started listening to the audiobook this past summer, but didn't get a chance to finish it.  I had the chance to purchase the book for $5 and I haven't been disappointed yet.  I'm still at the beginning stages, but I can't wait to get to the descriptions of Heaven!

One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1)

"If I got this over with I could hit the golden arches and squander the loose change in the bottom of my pocketbook on a burger.  Motivation."
p.26 -One for the Money by Janet Evanovich

(Hey!  Quit laughing!  The movie comes out soon and I want to be ready.  We all know that the books are always better anyways.  Besides, "everyone" tells me that they're pretty funny.  I could use a few laughs right now.)
